audience research - Interview
To help us decide what sub-genre to do for our final opening scene, we interviewed a variety of people to find out what sub-genre each age group, gender and cultural background preferred.
These are some of the questions we asked our interviewees:
- What is your favourite genre?
- What makes a scary movie effective?
- What is the best horror sub-genre? Zombie, slasher or paranormal?
- What is your all time favourite horror movie?
- What would separate our movie from the rest of the horrors currently on the market?

Interview Analyses
From doing this research, we got an idea what each age group, gender liked in a horror and it also helped us get an idea on what sub-genre of horror would reach a bigger audience.
From each age group we found out:
Older adults enjoy/expect:
- suspense
- zombie related horrors
- gory scenes
Favourite film: 'Wrong Turn'
Children enjoy/expect:
- unexpected twists
-zombies or paranormal
- original ideas
(Some children, however, have said they don't watch horrors because of their age. This tells us that we should be targeting an older audience.)
Teenagers (boys) expect/enjoy:
- jumpy scenes
- paranormal horrors
- very scary
- original
Favourite film: 'Paranormal Activity'
Teenagers (girls) expect/enjoy:
- slashers/paranormal
- gory
- bloods
- deaths
- an original idea
Favourite film: 'Dead Silence'
People with a cultural difference expect/enjoy:
- original
- zombie
- blood
Favourite film: 'The Ring'
Looking at our research, we noticed a constant response from what they wanted to see in our horror, was originality. This tells us that people want to see something that they've never seen before.
We have decided for our trailer sub-genre to be phycological to give the audiences something they've never seen before however there will also be aspects of a slasher as it is a popular sub genre within horror.
Interviewing people also gave us ideas on what to incorporate into our own horror opening scene. From this, we learnt that people expect suspense and that it is a key feature in a horror.
